New paper! The synchronization of Iranic and Hellenic loanwords in Proto-Uralic
(Response to Holopainen 2019, “Indo-Iranian borrowings in Uralic”)
In this response to Holopainen 2019, I address problematic affricate sibilant substitutions of Iranian loanwords by Proto-Uralic; revise the relative chronology of early “Indo-Iranian > Uralic” contact; identify the Iranian language in question as “Scythian”; and finally, synchronize this contact period with Helleno-Uralic contact ca. 800-500 BCE, in order to outline a decisive model for early Uralic disintegration from its nexus on the Volga-Kama interfluve during the Ananyino culture. Three phases of Scythian and Greek contact with Uralic are reconstructed:
1. Archaic Uralic ~ Finno-Ugric
2. Finno-Permic +/- Ugric
3. Finno-Mordvinic +/- Ugric
