The sourcing for “blue” is a very specific proposal, stemming from the mutual meaning of “gathering” in the infinitive verbs of each language – in the Finnish case, gathering mushrooms. Regarding the relationship I propose to the Finnish word for blue, it relates to boletes, which are a common type of mushroom in Finland. A general sign of toxicity in these mushrooms is that, when they are cut open, the exposed mushroom immediately turns a brilliant shade of blue. In the sense of “that which has been gathered”, these mushrooms would be noted (I suspect for the negativeness of their toxicity) for their blue colors. I believe mushrooms were a sought-after food item in these times, due to the semantic and phonological affinity of their verbs.
